Child and Family Outcomes

Families play an important role in identifying their goals when they begin the Intensive Family Support Service (IFSS). They help determine the outcomes they wish to achieve.

Participating families can learn skills to promote the healthy development of their children and reach their goals. Outcomes are best achieved when families learn and practise skills in the actual places where they will use the skills, such as their home and familiar community spaces.

The intensive nature of the IFSS program, and its focus on skills and local delivery, enables parents and carers to learn, practise and problem-solve in a very practical way. Examples of outcomes include:

  1. Child is adequately supervised
    • Carers know where the child is and can get to the child quickly if needed
    • Carers make safe and appropriate alternative arrangements when another carer is needed
    • Carers ensure that the child does not play with objects that have the potential to hurt or injure them
    • Carers ensure child plays in a safe environment (i.e. not in or around rubbish, are supervised near water, and are supervised with adult strangers)
  2. Child has their basic physical needs met
    • Carers ensure that the child has access to age-appropriate meals and snacks every day, including water, that meet their basic nutritional requirements
    • Young infants are provided with feeds as required
    • Carers ensure that the child lives in a home:
      • that is free of human or animal waste
      • that has surfaces free of spoiled food and waste
      • that is free of piles of rubbish 
      • where dangerous objects and substances (e.g. medicines) are inaccessible to the child 
    • Carers ensure the child has access to basic and essential items of clothing for the weather and that the child is dressed appropriately for weather conditions
    • Carers ensure that the child is regularly washed, teeth are cleaned and soiled clothing is changed
    • Carers promote age-appropriate sleep patterns
  3. Child has their physical health needs met
    • Where available, carers ensure that the child receives medical treatment to cure, prevent or alleviate physical injury, illness and disability, suffering or dental problems
    • Carers ensure that the child’s treatment plan is followed
    • Carers ensure that the child’s immunisations are up to date
  4. Child has their emotional and developmental needs met
    • Carers provide frequent and regular positive attention to the child
    • Carers attend to and respond to the child in a consistent, warm, caring manner
    • Carers express care, affection and love for the child
    • Carers ensure that child accesses age-appropriate games and activities
  5. Child has their educational requirements met 
    • Carers ensure school-aged child attends school
    • Carers provide the child with a responsive learning environment
    • Carers ensure that, where needed and available, the child receives remediation assistance to improve learning
